GINSBERG, ALLEN (1926-1997) Outstanding Autograph Letter Signed ”Allen”. One full page, quarto. New York, June 18, 1989. To Hungarian writer, novelist, poet and political essayist and longtime friend of Ginsberg, ISTVAN EÖRSI (1931-2005) Eörsi was imprisoned in 1956, following his activities as part of the Hungarian uprising, and spent three-and-a-half years in jail. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in his hand. Ginsberg writes:
”Dear Istvan, I read N.Y Times Account of Political funeral – sounds excellent! and RAKZ did the decos/honors. Worst comes to worst, try Juanita Lieberman (Peter s once-girl-friend) editor at PARAGON HOUSE, 90-5th Ave. N.Y. 10011 ^ N.Y. U.S.A. for your books. They publish some historical / archival material too. Not seen George Soros lately tho he s published some Political essays on Glasnost in N.Y. Times op. ed. Page. My photo show opened May 26 in —, with a fine book of 60 or so photos from Berlin, Nishen, Co. (NISHEN) & I just received first copy. I moved my office out! Out! Out! Of my house, the rooms are quiet as a tomb and am happily alone most of the day Bob Rosenthal & Vivky Stanburg are working in some 3 rooms I hired (expensive!) on 2nd Ave. and 14th Street, 4 blocks walk near here. What relief I can pee in silence. Old phone # is at office, new home phone (unlisted so please don t distribute) is (212) 4xx-2×85. Same old addresses for mail. I saw Hobo s son here a few months ago. Is our record still on sale, sold out? or sold poorly? Keep me informed about our latest salacious volume. Do you have a theater back again? I have no travel plans, tho I had many invitations to various parts of Europe. I think I told you, I was in Japan last October, I may visit Seoul Korea next year. Gall Bladder operation (removal) last Xmas made me want to stay home. I taught U.S. Black literature course this Spring and learned a lot, it changed my eyes for negroes more empathy, the literal shadow of slavery s still cast in present country s ostracism on the street (worse than 60 s hippies!) & jobs, they often internalize it – & us white folks rarely look into the pit of their grief, it s made me come to realize the long suffering decades. Well OK see you in time. Did I send you my little Blake essay book? Ever, Allen.”
Simply superb! One of the finest Ginsberg letters we have had the privilege of offering!
