TWO PAGE ALS OF U.S. GRANT AS PRESIDENT
GRANT, ULYSSES S. (1822-1885). Eighteenth President of the United States (1869-1877); Commander of the Union Army in the U.S. Civil War. Scarce Autograph Letter Signed, “U.S. Grant”, as President, on ruled stationery. Two separate pages, octavo. Long Branch, New Jersey, July 25, 1871. Some toning to first page, as seen in illustration, else fine condition. To “Dear James”. Grant writes:
“This will introduce to you Mr. John Hoey who has a summer resort at this place, and who I am pleased to have for a neighbor, and esteem as a personal friend. Whilst he is in Brussels I hope it may be your pleasure to show him some attention, all of which will be a favor to me and will be duly appreciated. Yours truly, U.S. Grant”.
Full autograph examples from Grant’s pen written while president are rather uncommon.
