“Dear Sir, I have only today received your letter of the 21st and so have not been able to answer it in time to let you know that I could not be present at your meeting in London yesterday. I am sorry I do not feel that I can take part in the effort to acquire the Bonaparte Library on account of the many claims which come upon me for objects of pressing necessity or more connect with my own pursuits. I hope you will therefore kindly excuse my not becoming a member of the General Committee although fully sympathizing with its objects as described in the paper accompanying your letter. Yours truly, Kevin.”
