EMERSON REPORTS THE DEATH OF A HARVARD CLASSMATE

Concord [Massachusetts], February 14, 1869. To fellow classmate and former President of the Massachusetts Senate, Charles Wentworth Upham, a vigorous foe of the Transcendentalism movement. Light toning, foldmarks otherwise Fine. Emerson writes regarding the death of their fellow Harvard University classmate, John Cheney, late President of the Concord Bank:

“Dear Upham, John M. Cheney died yesterday afternoon. His family, knowing that he was Secretary of the Class of 1821, have desired me to notify its members, that his funeral takes place from the Unitarian Church, in this town, at 3.30 P.M. on Tuesday next. Yours faithfully, R.W. Emerson.”
