“Dear Upham, John M. Cheney died yesterday afternoon. His family, knowing that he was Secretary of the Class of 1821, have desired me to notify its members, that his funeral takes place from the Unitarian Church, in this town, at 3.30 P.M. on Tuesday next. Yours faithfully, R.W. Emerson.”
