MOURNING CARD ISSUED ON THE DEATH OF CHARLES DICKENS

DICKENS, CHARLES. (1812-1870). English novelist.  A wonderful black bordered mourning keepsake issued on the death of Dickens in 1870.  Measuring approximately 6 ½ x 8 inches, the piece is blind embossed, paper raised, with cut-outs depicting 2 women mourning at mausoleum the bears the printed inscription: “In Affectionate Remembrance of / CHARLES DICKENS / Died June 9^th, 1870 / AGED 58 YEARS”.   Minor mounting trace on verso, else extremely fine condition.  These fragile keepsakes were often issued on the death of major English figures in the 18^th and 19^th century.  To find one in this condition is almost impossible, 153 years later.  A remarkable survivor of a lost art and time.
