SIR WILLIAM GILBERT REGRETFULLY DECLINES AN INVITATION ON BEHALF OF HIS GUEST
GILBERT, SIR WILLIAM S. (1836-1911). English playwright. Autograph Letter Signed, “W.S. Gilbert”, on his monogrammed WSG stationery. Two full, separate pages, octavo. “6 Evelyn Mansion, Victoria St.”, February 15, 1896. Very fine condition. To Mr. Harding. Gilbert writes: “Dear Mr. Harding, Miss Newland is going to Grim’s Dyke [Gilbert’s home] with us on Monday, to spend the day, & unfortunately we must leave by the 9:40 train—which will make it impossible for her to keep her appointment with you. If she does not hear from you to the contrary, she will be with you by 10 o’clock on Tuesday. Faithfully, W. S. Gilbert.” A fine example.
