VIRGINIA WOOLF ON VACATION IN SPAIN

WHERE THE SEEDS FOR ‘MRS. DALLOWAY’ WERE SOWN

WOOLF, VIRGINIA. (1882-1941) English novelist, essayist, publisher, and feminist;  Woolf is regarded as one of the foremost modernist literary figures of the twentieth century. Scarce Autograph Letter Signed, “Virginia Woolf,” penned in her usual lavender ink.  One full page, octavo.  “5th April” [1923] “Yegen [Spain]”.  With original stamped envelope addressed in her hand to: “Mrs. C. Temple / Casa Los Fosos / General Life / Granada / Spain”. Very fine condition.  Woolf writes:

“Dear Mrs. Temple, We feel that we did not thank you at all sufficiently for the great kindness you showed us. We enjoyed every minute of our time with you and came on here much refreshed. Happily we had a lovely day for our ride yesterday, as it was a long one. We did not reach Yegen till nine in pitch darkness. But this won’t mean much to a traveler like you.

We very much hope you will give us a chance of seeing you in the England. My husband wants me to say how much he enjoyed his talk with Mr. Temple and hopes he will be able to go with them later. Please remember us to him. Yours very sincerely, Virginia Woolf.”

Woolf and her husband, Leonard, visited the remote village of Yegen in southern Spain in April of 1923 to visit and stay with their friend, Gerald Brenan, the British writer who had made Yegen his home.  There they walked through the Mediterranean landscape, and spent their afternoons reading and sunbathing in a local fig grove.  It was while here that she began working on writing “Mrs Dalloway”, one of her best known and beloved books.
