MOURNING CARD ISSUED ON THE DEATH OF CHARLES DICKENS

DICKENS, CHARLES. (1812-1870). English novelist.  A wonderful black bordered mourning keepsake issued on the death of Dickens in 1870.  Measuring approximately 6 ½ x 8 inches, the piece is blind embossed, paper raised, with cut-outs depicting 2 women mourning at mausoleum the bears the printed inscription: “In Affectionate Remembrance of / CHARLES DICKENS / Died June 9th, 1870 / AGED 58 YEARS”.   Minor mounting trace on verso, else extremely fine condition.  These fragile keepsakes were often issued on the death of major English figures in the 18th and 19th century.  To find one in this condition is almost impossible, 153 years later.  A remarkable survivor of a lost art and time.
