GLADSTONE COMMENTS ON THE WINE DUTY

GLADSTONE, WILLIAM E (1809-1898) British Liberal statesman and Prime Minister (1868-74, 1880-85, 1886 and 1892-94). Autograph Letter Signed “W E Gladstone”, as Chancellor of the Exchequer.  2 pages, octavo. April 11, 1853. Downing Street. [London].  Very fine condition. Gladstone writes:

“…[the populous is] up in arms and under great apprehension, I must hold them over for a very short while yet; and as I have already offended, if at all, by referencing myself too Freely respecting the present wine Duty.   I am sure that for the moment you will excuse my giving other than to assure you that your suggestion has not failed to receive my attention.  I remain, Yours very faithfully, W. Gladstone.”
