“…[the populous is] up in arms and under great apprehension, I must hold them over for a very short while yet; and as I have already offended, if at all, by referencing myself too Freely respecting the present wine Duty. I am sure that for the moment you will excuse my giving other than to assure you that your suggestion has not failed to receive my attention. I remain, Yours very faithfully, W. Gladstone.”
