My delayed responses to your kind invitation to the [Judge] Boggs Dinner, Which I should in any event have acknowledged promptly, has been due to my eagerness to a – and very hope that circumstances would become  — to enable me to do so. The fact is that I have a temporarily invalid wife from whom I do not want to absent myself by an out of town visit unless for some compelling reason.  The likelihood that by November 9 things will have necessarily mended is now too recover. Accordingly, I have to deny myself the pleasure of your dinner and the opportunity, by personal presence, to testify to my esteem for Judge Briggs and my high regard for his judicial service.  Sincerely yours, Felix Frankfurter.”
