AFTER THE OUTBREAK OF WWI – SHERLOCK HOLMES CREATOR,
SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE, TRIES TO EXPLAIN THE VAGUE REALITY OF WAR
DOYLE, ARTHUR CONAN SIR (1859-1930) Physician and writer best known for creating the detective Sherlock Holmes. Autograph Letter Signed, “A. Conan Doyle,” on Windlesham, Crowborough, Sussex letterhead. One page, octavo. Crowborough. “Oct[ober] 26, 1914.” Doyle writes to “Mrs. Lucy Clifford”:
“Dear Mrs. Clifford It was very pleasant to hear from you. I hope you & your charming daughters are keeping well thro’ all the stress. I have an idea that the Germans have as much of our property as we have of theirs. If not I cannot conceive why this has not been done. It was been debated so I think there must be some strong reasons such as I suggest. I’ll watch it & help if I can, Yours very sincerely A. Conan Doyle.”
