MONROE, JAMES. (1758-1831). Fifth President of the United States. Autograph Document Signed, ”Jas’ Monroe”, as Secretary of State under James Madison. On folded cover, January 21, 1814. Addressed to ”The Collector of the Customs, Marblehead, Mass.” Brownish-red “Washington City June 21″ circular date stamp and ‘Free’ handstamp. Docketed integral notation: ”An Order not to grant a Commission to any vessel, unless her Crew consists of 20 Officers, & crew.” Fold marks through address portion, otherwise very fine condition. A perfect item for a starter set of Presidential autographs!
