FABULOUS ORIGINAL SIGNED SKETCH OF H.G. WELLS
WELLS. H[ERBERT] G[EORGE] (1866-1946.) English author best known for his science fictions works; “The Time Machine” (1895), “The Island of Dr. Moreau” (1896), “The Invisible Man” (1897), “The War of the Worlds” (1898), and “The First Men in the Moon” (1901). Original octavo [4 1/2 x 7 inches] pen-and-ink caricature of Wells, drawn by L. J. BINNS (1861?-1936?). [Noted caricaturist working after the turn of the 20th century in England; drew caricatures of British personalities, mainly from the worlds of theater and politics; his work is held in major collections at the NY Public Library, V&A Museum, London, and Harvard University, amongst many others.] Wonderfully inscribed and Signed, “Absolutely unlike me, H.G. Wells,” under his image. Minor mounting trace on left edge of verso, with light toning, else very fine condition. Wells is depicted in a half-length, ¾ profile full-face bust pose, wearing a heavy top coat. Also signed by “L.J. Binns” at lower right.
Binns original drawings are scarce commodities in the marketplace, and those signed by the sitter are highly desirable. Having one signed by one of the great 19th/20th century science fiction writers, H.G. Wells — is even more so!
