A STUNNING F.D.R. ITEM OF THE HIGHEST PHILATELIC INTEREST!
ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D. (1882-1945). Thirty-second President of the United States (1933-45). Unusual Postal Envelope signed “Franklin D. Roosevelt”, as President, on the return address portion of a red, white, and blue bordered, stamped envelope. In a striking overall presentation, Roosevelt has crossed out the typed address: “On Presidential Yacht” and penned in “U.S.S. Potomac.” 6½” x 3½”. Below the President’s signature and Potomac notation, in type is written: “At Sea Off Florida Coast via Special Plane to Miami, Florida”. Registered mail date stamps on verso April 23 & 24, 1936. Addressed to: ‘James A. Dew, West Palm Beach, Florida’. Hand stamped Special Delivery postal markings and four colorful, canceled postage stamps [totaling 41 cents] which include one commemorating his fifth cousin, President Theodore Roosevelt. The U.S.S. Potomac was FDR’s presidential yacht, commissioned by the Navy in 1936 and served him until his death in 1945. At one time owned by Elvis Presley, it is one of only 2 Presidential yachts still in existence. We have never seen another postal item quite like this. A simply superb display item of the highest philatelic interest!
