CARUSO, ENRICO (1873-1921) Acclaimed Italian tenor. Light tan cloth-bound quarto album containing a fascinating collection of memorabilia related to Caruso’s September 10, 1909, concert at the Town Hall, Newcastle-on-Tyne, England. 30+ pages, quarto.
This extensive collection is fronted by a cover of the concert program BOLDLY SIGNED BY CARUSO across a central photographic vignette of the opera star, shown in a profile bust pose.
Numerous printed documents related to the logistical and advertising for the performance are laid within. This includes a plan of the town hall, an extensive selections of newspaper clippings, an original program for the historic performance, 7 (seven) tickets (all in various colors to delineate theatre section) to the concerts, a printed tour list for Caruso’s 1909 tour, and a large 4 page flyer depicting Caruso and the principal performers (10×15 inches).
In addition, there are numerous letters from Caruso’s manager, Thomas Quinlan, related to the planning of his Newcastle performance. Included among these is a letter written to the Newcastle-based photographer Charles Nicol, who served as the local representative for Quinlan, stating:
“ … Signor Caruso – who has been photographed all over the World – desires me to tell you that he considers these of yours amongst the best he has taken anywhere …”
Two photographs are also included: one showing Caruso holding a Brownie camera and looking at the unseen photographer in amusement and another taken in Nichol’s studio that shows Caruso standing beside a piano with Thomas Quinlin and two other individuals. Just a superb opportunity for the Caruso collector to obtain a wonderful package detailing many of the multiple aspects of a performance by him at the height of his talents.
