CHIEF JUSTICE WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT STATES:  “I LIKE MR. [HENRY CABOT] LODGE MUCH BETTER AS A LITERARY MAN AND HISTORIAN THAN IN OTHER FIELDS.”

TAFT, WILLIAM HOWARD.  (1857-1930).   27th President of the United States (1909–1913) and later the tenth Chief Justice of the United States (1921–1930); the only person to have served in both of these offices.  Attractive Autograph Letter Signed “Wm H Taft”, on imprinted Supreme Court stationary, just two months after being appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.  September 15, 1921. “Ponte a Pic, Ontario’.  [Taft has penned a Province of Quebec address atop the Supreme Court imprint.]  With original embossed Supreme Court envelope, with a Canadian postal 2 cent stamp affixed.  1 1/3 pages, small quarto. [written on the 1st and 3rd pages, so that when the letter is open, will make a fine display item].   Very fine condition.  Taft writes:

“Dear Miss Tibbits, Thank you very much for your fourth May remembrance of Cabot Lodge’s brochure on the Pilgrims.  I like Mr. Lodge much better as a literary man and historian than in other fields. I shall read this little volume with much pleasure  – Present my warm regard and respect to your father – Say I missed him at my party.  With the hope of meeting you and him, safe and sound next year, as usual on the banks and elsewhere at Murray Bay, and with grateful appreciation,   Sincerely yours, Wm. H. Taft.”
