FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE’S BOOK:   NOTES ON NURSING,  WHAT IT IS, AND WHAT IT IS NOT   —  WITH TIPPED IN PRESENTATION FROM HER, ON THE TITLE PAGE!

NIGHTINGALE, FLORENCE.  (1820-1910).  British nurse, hospital reformer and humanitarian.  Her book:  Notes on Nursing, what it is and what it is not.  Harrison, London, [1860].  First edition, very early, true first state, with the notice: “[The right of translation is reserved]” at the base of the title page and with illustrated, light-yellow end-papers bearing advertisements for Burkes’ Peerage, The Foreign Office List for 1860 [with the 8 in 1860 in slightly larger type] and Anthems for Parish Choirs listed.  Original dark brown/black pebbled cloth, with front cover lettered in gilt, blind-stamped ruling to covers, and spine.

MONTGOMERY, BERNARD LAW, FIRST VISCOUNT OF ALAMEIN.  (1887-1976).  British soldier. Remarkable War-date, Typed Letter Signed, “Yrs. ever, B.L. Montgomery”, on his crested and imprinted Headquarters: 21 Army Group stationery.  One page, large octavo.  TAC Headquarters, September 14, 1944

MARIE ANTOINETTE  —  QUEEN OF FRANCE, ORDERS PAYMENT OF 60 POUNDS TO ONE OF HER COURT COURRIERS

MARIE ANTOINETTE.  (1755 –1793) Queen of France; born archduchess of Austria, youngest daughter of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis I; she became dauphine of France upon her marriage to Louis-Auguste, [LouisXVI] heir apparent to the French throne (1770); during the French Revolution, she was convicted by the Revolutionary Tribunal of high treason and executed, by guillotine, [2 days after her husband, Louis XVI] at the Place de la Revolution. (14 October 1793).  Scarce Manuscript Document Signed, “Payez / Marie Antoinette”, as Queen.  One page, large legal folio, vellum.  Versailles, April 1, 1783.

DISRAELI, BENJAMIN.  1ST EARL OF BEACONSFIELD. (1804-1881).  British statesman and conservative politician; Prime Minister (1868 and 1874-1880); only Prime Minster to have been of Jewish origin.  Good Autograph Letter Signed, “D.”  Four full pages, octavo.  Grosvenor Gate, [London] April 23, 1850.  Very fine condition.

CHARLES A. LINDBERGH — LESS THAN 2 WEEKS AFTER CROSSING THE ATLANTIC, SOLO, FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME, DEDICATES A PHOTOGRAPH TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE HE WAS TAKEN FOR A CHECK UP AFTER LANDING AT LE BOURGET AERODROME JUST OUTSIDE PARIS!

LINDBERGH, CHARLES A. (1902-1874). American aviator, military officer, author, inventor, and activist; First aviator to complete a solo transatlantic flight, which he did in his plane, Spirit of St. Louis.  An absolutely Superb vintage sepia-toned, octavo Photograph Inscribed, on the photographic surface to the lower left of his image: “To one of my best / friends in France, / [the] Rene L’hopital. / Charles A. Lindbergh, / June 4, 1927”.
