STUART MERRILL TO GUSTAVE KAHN ABOUT KAHN’S WIFE AND “HER CONVERSION TO JUDAISM…[A REPLY] TO THE IGNOMINIES AND HYPOCRISIES OF MODERN CHRISTIANITY”

MERRILL, STUART.  (1863-1915).  American poet; known for Petits Poemes d’Automne, Les Fastes, and other works;  he met Walt Whitman at a New York lecture in 1887.  Uncommon Autograph Letter Signed, “Stuart Merrill”, in French.  Three pages, octavo.  “53 Quai de Bourbon”, [Paris], “Monday”, no year.  .  Very fine condition.  To GUSTAVE KAHN.  (1859-1936), French Symbolist poet and art critic.   Merrill writes:

“I indeed received the letter from you, and that from Mendes, inviting me to participate in the new Saturdays.  Please wait a little bit yet, I am writing a play which I will send you in a few days.  A cordial handshake and my respects to Madame Kahn.  By the way, is it too late to congratulate Madame Kahn on her conversion to Judaism?  Although I remain resolutely outside of all dogma, I cannot refrain from applauding the attitude of your wife who has replied so boldly to the ignominies and hypocrisies of modern Christianity.  Sincerely,   Stuart Merrill”.
