ON THE CUSP OF ACHIEVING GREAT SUCCESS AS AN ARTIST, CLAUDE MONET WRITES: ~~ “NATURE IS ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL AND IT’S ONLY IN THE WORK THAT IT IS POSSIBLE FOR ME TO FORGET ALL MY WORRIES BECAUSE I AM STARTING TO NOT BE A BEGINNER ANYMORE…”
MONET, CLAUDE. (1840-1926). Founding member, and leader in French Impressionist painting movement; the term: ‘Impressionism’ is derived from the title of his painting: Impression, Sunrise. A sad and somewhat melancholy, yet important, Autograph Letter Signed, “Claude Monet,” in French. 3 full pages, large octavo. Vétheuil, December 30, 1878, To his patron and collector, Georges de BELLIO. Monet writes:
“Since we are obliged to remain in the countryside again for a more or less long time but that I cannot specify, I will not be able to come and shake your hand on the 1st of the year. So let me send you my best wishes and let me thank you for your kindness to me because I have often used, maybe abused, and I owe you a lot, believe me. So to my sincere thanks… and excuse me for having tormented you so often. I work a lot harder than ever even because we cannot stay indefinitely here, and in such a situation. Nature is always beautiful and it’s only in the work that it is possible for me to forget all my worries because I am starting to not be a beginner anymore and it is sad to be at my age in such a situation, always obliged to ask, or to solicit business. I doubly feel my misfortune at this time of the year and 79 will start as this year has ended, very sadly for the me especially to [those] whom I cannot make the most modest present….”
Really just an exceptional letter on so many levels. Worthy of inclusion in the finest of artist collections.
