SPEAKING ON THE SALT RIOTS AND SOCIAL REVOLUTION IN INDIA!

GANDHI, MONHANDAS KARAMCHAND.  (1869-1948).  Considered the father of the Indian independence movement; Gandhi spent 20 years in South Africa working to fight discrimination there; created his concept of satyagraha, a non-violent way of protesting against injustices;  returned to India in 1914 to found and lead the Indian independence movement.   An exceedingly-scarce Autograph Letter Signed, “your sincere, old friend /M.K. Gandhi”.    Two full pages, quarto, in pencil.  “Ahmedabad, 25^th February [no year, but circa 1930].  Tiny tape repairs, and some smudging to one 5 line section of the letter, from being placed in the envelope and having used a very soft leaded pencil, else fine condition.   Writing from a period of great development within Gandhi’s own spiritual life, and from the period where Indian Independence had its earliest successful start against British Imperial rule,   Gandhi writes in full:

25th Feb

My dear friend,

I am still traveling.  This I am writing from in the train at a junction sta[tion], on my way to Hyderabad Sinsh.    The province of our friend Chelaram.  I reach Ahmedabad on the 5th or the 6th of March when I hope to attend to your letter, meanwhile I am rendering in my own mind how I shall make your biscuits.

Two days ago I stopped the fruit [?] experiment. I have observed during my travels that unless you have extreme[?] of money … to the fruit diet. It is unthinkable to me that I should have to take worked food here   in the land of eternal sunshine. I will report weekly upon the progress of this revolution. I have still to restrict myself to five articles   salt for instance being wanted an article.

It has been definitely decided not to admit any further scholars into the ashram for the time being. We are all over worked & still not able to do full justice to the boys. Magandal & Jarmnedas are still at Madras learning Tamil & weaving   I want to send others too, to do likewise.  they will probably go to other places. Ramdas is with me during my travels. And Satakisi who has not been keeping well has been sent to Surat for a change. Coopoo has left for South Africa. Maganbhai & Manidal remain in charge of the Ashram during my absences.

Both the Mehpas were in Bombay.  Dr. Jiurajmehta has returned from London & is practicing.  With love in which Ramdas joins
