I HAVE LONG BEEN ON TERMS OF INTIMATE FRIENDSHIP WITH HIM”
BUCHANAN, JAMES (1791-1868) 15th President of the United States. Good Autograph Letter Signed “James Buchanan’; as Secretary of State under President Polk. One full page, quarto. “Washington. August 17, 1848”. Very fine condition. To William P. Schell, a lawyer from Bedford, Pennsylvania who later served in the State Legislature. Buchanan here introduces a Naval surgeon. He writes:
“My dear Sir, It affords me pleasure to introduce to you the bearer hereof, a Dr. J.M. Jolly, a surgeon in the U.S. Navy. He will accompany the President tomorrow morning to the Bedford Springs & is, in every respect, worthy of your regard. I have long been on terms of intimate friendship with him & know that on my account first, and afterwards on his own, you will pay him kind attentions. I owe you a large debt of gratitude for your valued friendship, in the storm as well as the sunshine: & I trust that I may be able some day to manifest it by returning your kindness. From your friend / Very respectfully, James Buchanan.”
