“I am delighted to see by the evening paper that you have been successful on Westmoreland. It must have been a stiff fight, as every one said nothing could be done against the Rigg interest. I am quite specially glad that you should get in, as I have known & admired your self-sacrifice, on former occasions, both in standing & in not standing. I remember a conversation we had in Cheque Walk, when you maintained that a man could hardly get into Parliament if he was thoroughly conscientious; but now your view is agreeably falsified. I fear – or rather I hope – that it will be a very short time before a dissolution compels you to face another election; but I suppose, if it is very soon, there would not be afresh contest in your constituency.
