HENRY CLAY ASKS TO FORWARD HIS LETTER TO FRANCE — AN ATTRACTIVE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED

CLAY, HENRY.  (1777-1852).  American lawyer, statesman, and diplomat who represented Kentucky in both the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate; seventh House Speaker; ninth Secretary of State; unsuccessfully ran for president in the 1824, 1832, and 1844 elections; helped found both the National Republican Party and the Whig Party;  known as: “The Great Compromiser” for his role in defusing sectional crises.   Autograph Letter Signed, “H. Clay”.  One page, quarto.  ‘Ashland [his home, in Kentucky], August 15, 1835”.  To Mr. Groverneur.  Clay writes: “I request the favor of you to place this letter in the first packet for Havre [France]. Do not give yourself the trouble to reply, as I shall feel confident that the letter is forwarded.  Yours respectfully, H. Clay”.  Fine condition, and nice example for a starter set of American statesman.
