MANET ASKS A THEATRE PRODUCER TO ATTEND THE AUDITION WHERE A YOUNG WOMAN WHO HIS FRIEND HAS AN ACTIVE “INTEREST IN” IS ABOUT TO APPEAR

MANET, EDOUARD (1832-1883) French painter and a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. Scarce Autograph Letter Signed, with his full signature  “Edouard Manet,” in French. One page, large octavo. No place. “July 19” no year. Manet writes to “My dear [Jean] Coquelin”. [Coquelin was an actor and involved with stage productions in France.]  Manet writes:                                                      

“One of my good friends asked me to recommend to you Mme Amerie Villetard, [French playwright and actress] a lady in whom he is interested, who is scheduled to be auditioned this months in the Theatre Francais.  It would be very kind of you to attend the audition.  Best, Edouard. Manet.”

 

Very fine condition.  Framed in ercu, terra-cotta and antique gilt, with a handsome photo of the bearded artist in a bust pose, wearing a Chesterfield coat.  Old NYC autograph gallery description affixed on verso of the frame. Overall size is aprox 16 x 14 inches, and is ready for your wall!
