ROBERT E. LEE ~ AUTOGRAPHS HIS NEWLY REVISED BOOK ON HIS GRANDFATHER: “LIGHT HORSE HARRY LEE” ~ “MEMOIRS OF THE WAR IN THE SOUTHERN DEPARTMENT OF THE UNITED STATES”
LEE, HENRY III. [“Light-Horse Harry”] (1756-1818). American patriot and politician who served as the ninth governor of Virginia and as the Virginia representative to the United States Congress; his service during the American Revolution as a cavalry officer in the Continental Army earned him the nickname by which he is best known, “Light-Horse Harry”; grandfather of Confederate general Robert E. Lee. His very-scarce book: “Memoirs of the war in the Southern Department of the United States. – A new edition, with revisions, and a Biography of the Author, by Robert E. Lee.” New York, University Publishing Company, 1869. 620 pages, large octaco. [approximately 6 x 10 inches]. In dark brown cloth covered boards, with Lee’s family crest and motto embossed on the front cover. First edition thus. Boldly Signed by Lee: “Robert E. Lee” on the verso of the half-title page.

We can say that this book is rarely found in the market place, and other than one copy in the Gilder-Lehrman collection, we can recall no other copy coming to market. Just an exceptional item for the civil war, or military book collector.
