JOHN JAY ~ AS FIRST SUPREME COURT CHIEF JUSTICE

JAY, JOHN.  (1745-1829).  American statesman and jurist; first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.  Scarce Autograph Document Signed in the third person: “The Ch[ief] Justice”.  One page, oblong 16 mo. No place. Sunday Evg, No date [1794]. Some toning from previous framing, else fine condition.  Jay writes:  “The Ch. Justice of the U.S. presents his comp[limen]ts. To Mr. Bayard – he has seen Mr. Trumball and requested him to write his brother what the answer will be is uncertain. Mr. Bayard may probably see him – if so, there can be no impropriety in mentioning to him what has occurred.”          Finding anything written from Jays’ pen as the first Supreme Court Justice is exceedingly difficult these days.  A fine example for the Supreme Court collector.
