‘IN THE WAR OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION’
ADAMS, JOHN QUINCY. (1767-1848). Sixth President of the United States (1825-1829); fierce anti-slavery advocate as Congressman. Good Autograph Letter Signed, “John Quincy Adams”. One page, small quarto. Washington, DC January 17, 1838. To “Joseph Robbins, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia”. Adams writes:
“I have received from the Pension Office in this city a certificate of Pension in your favour for 80 dollars a year during your natural life commensing on the 4th of March 1831 and payable semi-anniually on the 4th of March and 4th of September in every year for your services in the War of American Revolution – payable by William Freeman Esq acting agent for paying Pensioners in the Agency of Massachusetts at Boston. Will you have the goodness to inform me where and to whom I shall send this Certificate, I am very respectfully, Sir your obed[ien]t Serv[an]t, John Quincy Adams.”
Just a fine piece from Adams’ pen showing his involvement with a member of his constituency in his post Presidential years.
