SHAFTER, WILLIAM RUFUS (1835-1906) Union Army officer during the Civil War; awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Fair Oaks; In April 1864 he was appointed Colonel of the 17th United States Colored Infantry and led the regiment at the Battle of Nashville; played a prominent role as a Major General in the Spanish-American War. His scarce Signature and rank: “Wm. R. Shafter / Major Genl. Vols. / Brig. Genl. U.S.A.” as cut from a larger document. Mounted to a 24mo card. Fine condition. His autograph has always been difficult to obtain, and the above is an exceptionally fine example.
