GEORGE WASHINGTON GOETHALS  ~~  THE CHIEF ENGINEER FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE PANAMA CANAL

GOETHALS, GEORGE WASHINGTON. (1858-1928) U.S. Army officer and Civil Engineer; best known for his administration and supervision of the construction and the opening of the Panama Canal.  Uncommon Typed Letter Signed, “G. W. Goethals,” on Isthmian Canal Commission letterhead. One page, quarto. Culebra. December 4, 1913.  Fine condition.  Goethals writes to “Mr. William H. Rideing, The Youths’ Companion, Boston, Mass”: “Dear Mr. Rideing:  I am in receipt of yours of the24th ultimo and regret that my time is so occupied with other matters that I do not see how it will be possible for me at this time to undertake the preparation of an article.”   The grand opening of the canal was just under 8 months away.  No doubt Goethals had little time to write an article for the youth magazine.
