JEFFERSON, THOMAS (1743-1826) 3rd President of the United States. Partially Printed Document Signed, “Th. Jefferson,” as President. COUNTERSIGNED by Secretary of State JAMES MADISON (1751-1836) 4th President of the United States. One page, vellum, folio. [Approximately 12 x 15 inches]. Washington. September 28, 1808. [Madison’s signature is a little lighter than Jefferson’s but acceptable]. Endorsement penned on the verso by Henry Dearborn, Secretary of War, acknowledging the recipients participation in the land bounty reward. Paper wafer Seal of State affixed at lower left. The document reads, in part:
“ … in consideration of military services performed by William Bentley, a captain for ten months and, and Henry Mass, a captain for ten months, to the United States, in the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment, and in pursuance of an Act of Congress of the United States, passed on the 10th day of August in the year 1790, intituled [sic] “An Act to enable the Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment, to obtain titles to certain lands lying north-west of the River Ohio, between the Little Miami and Sciota;” and another Act of the said Congress, passed on the 9th day of June, in the year 1794, amendatory of the said Act, these is granted by the United States unto John Baird a certain tract of land, containing Eight Hundred and Eighty Eight acres situate between the Little Miami and Sciota Rivers, north-west of the River Ohio, as by survey, bearing date the tenth of February in the year one thousand eight hundred and eight …”
