HENRY JAMES ARRANGES TO ATTEND A REHERSAL OF IBSEN’S PLAY: LITTLE EYOLF
JAMES, HENRY. (1843-1916). American writer. Good Autograph Letter Signed, “Henry James”, on his embossed 34 de Vere Gardens, W. stationery. Four full pages, octavo. London, “Tuesday”, no date. Very fine condition. Accompanied by original envelope addressed to “Miss MacPhearson, 38 Cambridge Terrace, Hyde Park, W.” James writes:
“Dear Miss MacPhearson, Please forgive my accidental delay in answering your note. I am all the more sorry as I am deprived by another engagement of the pleasure of hearing you sing this afternoon. I hoped for it—but the beautiful entanglements of this blessed city conspire. I was to have gone, by arrangement, to see Mrs. Frisfield [?] on Friday, but asked her to change it so that I might go on that day to the dress rehearsal of Little Eyolf. She then named today at 5.30. I accepted and now I must go. Please believe in my great regret and I thank you much for so gracefully writing to me. Yours most truly, Henry James”.
From the content, we can place this letter to late 1894. Nice association of James and Ibsen.
