“THE PRESIDENT AND MRS. LINCOLN. AT HOME, TUESDAY EVENING, MARCH 1, 1864, FROM 9 UNTIL 12 O’CLOCK.”
[ABRAHAM LINCOLN]. Extremely-rare engraved presidential invitation to the White House. One page, 16mo. [4.5 x 2.5 inches]. No place, [Washington D.C.], Printed probably late February 1864. The invitation reads: “The President and Mrs. Lincoln. / At home, / Tuesday Evening, March 1, 1864, / From 9 until 12 o’clock.” In very fine condition.
On March 1st, the newspaper the ‘Daily National Republican’ reported: ‘This evening the President and Mrs. Lincoln will entertain at the Executive Mansion the members of Congress and their families…no cards of invitation have been issued to any other person.’ Also on this day, President Lincoln submitted the nomination papers for Grant’s promotion to lieutenant general to the Senate. We can recall seeing this particular invitation only 3 times previously, in our 6 decades of handling the finest in historic autographs. Just an extremely rare Lincoln item.Â
