JOHN QUINCY ADAMS
AN EXCEEDINGY RARE SIGNED ENGRAVED PORTRAIT
ADAMS, JOHN QUINCY. (1767-1848). Sixth President of the United States (1825-29). An exceedingly rare, engraved portrait of J.Q.A. produced by Nathaniel Dearborn. Boldly Signed across the top margin, above his image, in black ink using his full name, “John Quincy Adams.” The lower border bears a preprinted facsimile signature. Overall size: 3 7/32 x 4 21/32 inches. This portrait is in exceedingly fine condition, as issued. Adams is known to have ordered some of these portraits from Dearborn, a fellow Bostonian, around 1842.
A few other signed examples of this engraving are known. One with severely trimmed margins (over an inch loss in width, and nearly an inch in height, along with the signature trimmed slightly, thus greatly reducing its desirability, in our opinion,) recently appeared in the auction rooms, and sold for $7500. But, these signed portraits hardly ever appear on the market and we know of only 4 examples. These are the earliest known signed images of any President and thus hold substantial historical value.
A choice opportunity for the Presidential collector, of a seldom-seen presidential rarity. As ‘special’ as they come, and thus clearly deserving of being called, one of our: “The Best of the Best.”™
