STANTON, EDWIN M. (1814-1869) American lawyer, politician, U.S. Attorney General, and Secretary of War in Abraham Lincoln’s cabinet. Autograph Receipt Signed, “E.M. Stanton.” One page, oblong 12mo. No place. “May 3, 1848.” Stanton writes: “Recd. Of William Cromey Executor of Robert Cromey five dollars for court fee in relation to s[ai]d estate. E.M. Stanton.”  Anything from this early period in his career is uncommon.  Odds are you won’t ever see another!
