ATTRACTIVE ONE PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER OF C. S. LEWIS

LEWIS, C.S.  [IN FULL: CLIVE STAPLES LEWIS].  1898-1963.   Irish-born scholar, novelist, and author of about 40 books, many of them on Christian apologetics;  best known for his: The Chronicles of Narnia, a series of seven children’s books that have become classics of fantasy literature;  friend and associate of J.R.R. Tolkien.    Scarce, and apparently unpublished Autograph Letter Signed, “C. S. Lewis”, on a single leaf of plain paper stationery that he has headed: “As from Magdalen College / Cambridge”  Octavo.  “March 2, [19]59  To “Dear  Madam”.  Neatly tipped onto the front inside cover of his “Poems”, issued by the executors of his estate in 1964, and published by Geoffrey Bles, Ltd. London.  In original dust jacket, with minor imperfections, else very fine.  Lewis writes: “I hope this letter will reach you, but I have found your signature very difficult to read and am not all that sure that my solution is the right one.  I don’t know the source of the quotation you sent me.  Have you tried the two volumes of Poems?  They are the part of his work that I know least.  With all good wishes, yours sincerely, C. S. Lewis”.   It is probable that Lewis is referencing the ‘Poems’ of John Donne, issued in two volumes, of the 16th century English poet, but we can not be certain.  Just a wonderful letter showing Lewis’ humble modesty in his inability to distinguish the woman’s name, and yet takes a moment to respond to her inquiry.  His letters are scarce.
