WEBSTER, NOAH. (1758-1843). American lexicographer; called the “Father of American Scholarship and Education”; authored a large number of “Blue-Backed Speller” books which were used to teach American children how to spell and read; author of the modern Merriam-Webster dictionary that was first published in 1828 as An American Dictionary of the English Language. Exceedingly-scarce Partly-Printed beehive vignetted Check Signed, “N. Webster”, drawn on New Haven Bank. New Haven, April 20, 1839. Illustrated bee hive at upper left. Made payable “to A.B.” for $100. Boldly Signed by Webster in the lower right-hand corner. Bank cancellation not affecting signature. Very fine condition.
