PRESIDENT HAYES AFFIRMS HIS ASSESSMENT ON A LEGAL CASE THAT IS PENDING,  AFTER HEARING FROM HIS FORMER SECRETARY OF STATE, WILLIAM M. EVARTS

HAYES, RUTHERFORD B(IRCHARD).  (1822-93).  Nineteenth President of the United States (1877-81).  Uncommon Autograph Letter Signed, “R.B. Hayes”, as President, on imprinted Executive Mansion stationery.  Full page, octavo.  Washington, D.C., “5 September 1879”.  To “Hon[orable] Wm Hunter / Acting Sec[retar]y of State”.  Very fine condition.  Headed “Private”, and docketed “Received 5 Sept” in Hunter’s hand.   Hayes writes:

“Enclosed please find Mr. Evarts [William M Evarts] supplementary opinion in the La Abros [?] case, affirmed by me, and sent you awaiting action.   Sincerely, R.B. Hayes”.
