POSSIBLY UNIQUE U.S. GRANT FREE FRANK SIGNATURE SIGNED AS PRESIDENT  —  AND ADDRESSED TO THE FAMOUS NEWSPAPER MAN: HORACE GREELEY

GRANT, ULYSSES S. (1822-1885) Eighteenth President of the United States (1869-77);  General-in-Chief of the Union Army during the American Civil War.  His bold franking Signature, “U.S. Grant,” as President, on the front panel of what was an envelope that is imprinted “From the President of the United States”.  It is addressed entirely in Grant’s handwriting to: “Hon H. Greeley, Arlington House, Washington, D.C.”  [HORACE GREELEY (1811-1872) American newspaper editor, politician, and founder of the Liberal Republican Party].  One page, oblong 16 mo.   [approximately 3 x 5 ¾ inches]. No date. No place [Washignton, D.C.].    The association of these two men, the unique quality of the imprint, and the boldness of Grant’s signature just make this a wonderful item!
