GRANT, ULYSSES S. (1822-1885) Eighteenth President of the United States (1869-77); General-in-Chief of the Union Army during the American Civil War. His bold franking Signature, “U.S. Grant,” as President, on the front panel of what was an envelope that is imprinted “From the President of the United States”. It is addressed entirely in Grant’s handwriting to: “Hon H. Greeley, Arlington House, Washington, D.C.” [HORACE GREELEY (1811-1872) American newspaper editor, politician, and founder of the Liberal Republican Party]. One page, oblong 16 mo. [approximately 3 x 5 ¾ inches]. No date. No place [Washignton, D.C.].
