SHAKESPEARE’S ~~ ‘THE WINTER’S TALE’ — BROADSIDE
AN 1840 PRODUCTION AT THE THEATRE-ROYAL IN NEWCASTLE — THAT JUST HAPPENS TO FEATURE THE PARENTS OF ELLEN TERNAN, CHARLE’S DICKEN’S MISTRESS, IN THE LEAD ROLLS!
[SHAKESPEARE – A WINTER’S TAIL – 1840 PLAYBILL] An exceedingly-rare printed playbill announcing: ‘The Public is respectfully informed that inconsequence of the rapturous applause with which the second representation of the Piece was honoured on Monday last, and to satisfy the numerous applications that have been made at the Box-Office, Shakespeare’s celebrated Play of The WINTER”S TALE will be repeated on Friday Evening, February 7, 1840” . It should be noted that the roles of Leontes and Mamillius are being played by the parents of Ellen Ternan who was to become Charles Dickens’ mistress, after meeting her in August 1857, while rehearsing Wilkie Collins play ‘The Frozen Deep’. One page, quarto. [approximately 7 ½ x 10 inches]. Neatly laid to a heavier backing leaf, else near fine condition. An exceedingly-rare item, both in terms of Shakespearian material and Dickensian lore. Just absolutely choice!
