JACQUELINE KENNEDY LAMENTS: “I WISH I DID KNOW MORE ABOUT MY FORBEARS”

KENNEDY, JACQUELINE  [Mrs. John F.]  (1929-1994). First Lady.  Revealing Autograph Letter Signed, “Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy”, on her imprinted Hickory Hill stationery.  Two full pages, octavo.  McLean, Virginia  no date.  [25 April 1956].   With original stamped envelope addressed in Mrs. Kennedy’s hand.   To the biographer and writer: Orma R. Davies, Lock Haven, PA.  She writes:

“I appreciated your letter so much – I wish I did know more about my forbears – My grandfather came from France – and I know a Bouvier did come to Philadelphia in colonial times – But he spelt his name Bouvier, not Beauvier, and as far as I know, none of them ever moved to Canada – I don’t think Cornelius Harvey was an ancestor – that doesn’t ring a bell at all – the Bouvier who went to Philadelphia was named Andre Eustache I think – It does seem a shame not to know all this – My father knows much more about it than I do – and I must ask him to clarify it all for me – Thank you very much for your letter.  I only wish I could have been of more help.  Very Sincerely, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.”

A remarkable letter detailing some of the Kennedy genealogy, and Mrs. Kennedy’s understanding of her ancestry.  Her full signature as: “Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy” makes this letter all-the-more desirable.
