SCARCE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED OF MILLARD FILLMORE AS PRESIDENT – RESPONDING TO AN INVITATION TO ATTEND BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS FOR HENRY CLAY

FILLMORE, MILLARD.  (1800-74).  Thirteenth President of the United States (1850-3).  Choice, and surprizingly scarce, Autograph Letter Signed,  as President, “Millard Fillmore”.  One very full page, quarto.  Washington, March 29, 1851.  To a committee consisting of New Yorkers by the names of: ‘Brewer, Wood, Blunt, Bradford and Corroll’, who were requesting President Fillmore’s attendance at a dinner honoring Henry Clay. Exceptionally  fine condition.  Headed: “Private”.  Fillmore writes: 

“Gentlemen, I have yours of the 20th  inst. Inviting me to attend the celebrarion of the birth day of Henry Clay on the 12th of April.  I approved of the honors intended  for that illustrious statesman, and should be happy to unite with you in paying them; but regret that my official duties will put it out of my power to attend.

With many thanks for oyur expression of confidence in my administration, I remain Gentlemen, Truly yours, Millard Fillmore”.

 

Just an exceptional letter that will make an outstanding addition to any collection of Presidents, and especially choice for its association with Henry Clay.
