JOHN JAY ORDERS THE ISSUANCE OF A PARDON
JAY, JOHN (1745-1829) First Chief Justice of the United States; American politician, statesman, diplomat, and Founding Father; elected to the First Continental Congress, where he signed the Continental Association, and to the Second Continental Congress, where he served as its President; from 1779 to 1782, Jay served as the ambassador to Spain where he persuaded them to provide financial aid to the fledgling United States; served as a negotiator of the Treaty of Paris, in which Britain recognized American Independence; Served as the first Secretary of State on an interim basis. Uncommon Autograph Document Signed, “John Jay,” as Governor of New York State, having retired from the US Supreme Court some 2 years earlier. One page, oblong narrow octavo. New York, 26 May, 1797. To: ”Lewis A Scott Esq / Sec[retar]y of the State.” The document reads:
“Prepare a Pardon for the aforementioned Patrick Nary – John Jay”.
Just a wonderfully penned document, with a bold and distinctive Jay signature.
