THE WAR HYMN OF THE CONDEFERACY

“MARYLAND!  MY MARYLAND!”

RANDALL, JAMES R.   (1839-1908) American poet, writer, and journalist; intensely Southern in his sympathies, he wrote ‘Maryland My Maryland!’ in reaction to hearing that his friend Francis X. Ward, of Randallstown, Maryland, was killed by the 6th Massachusetts Militia in the Baltimore Riot of April 19, 1861; it became the war hymn of the Confederacy, and state song of Maryland. Scarce and very choice Autograph Quotation Signed, “James R Randall”, being a verse of his famous song ‘Maryland, My Maryland’.  One page, lined octavo paper. Light foxing along left edge, else fine condition.  He pens:

“Hark to an exiled son’s appeal, Maryland!

My Mother State, to thee I kneel, Maryland!

For life and death, for woe and weal,

Thy peerless chivalry reveal,

And gird thy beauteous limbs with steel,

Maryland!  My Maryland!

James R. Randall.”

Despite the great popularity of this verse, they are surprisingly scarce.  The above is a fine example and worthy of inclusion in any Civil War, or Southern poetry /writers collection.
