ROBERT MORRIS & THE LIBRARY COMPANY OF PHILADELPHIA – 1779

MORRIS, ROBERT.  (1734-1806).  American financier;  one of only two people to sign the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the U.S Constitution;  From 1781 to 1784, he served as the Superintendent of Finance of the United States, becoming known as the “Financier of the Revolution.” Along with Alexander Hamilton and Albert Gallatin, he is widely regarded as one of the founders of the financial system of the United States. Extremely-uncommon Partly-printed Document Signed, “Robt. Morris”.  One page, oblong octavo.  Philadelphia, August 14, 1779.  Minor edge chipping, else fine condition.   Endorsed by Swannick on the verso.  The document reads:

 

 “I DO hereby engage to be answerable to the library company of Philadelphia, for the Time of one year for any Books which may be lent to John Swannick, Jnr.”.  He signing notes the same in my behalf…Robt Morris”.

 

The Library Company of Philadelphia was founded in 1731 by Benjamin Franklin and is still in operation today.  They have accumulated one of the most significant collections of historically valuable manuscripts and printed material in the United States.  We have not seen this form before in our 45+ years of offering the finest in historic Americana.
