A REMARKABLE PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM CONTAINING SIGNED C.D.V.’S FROM LINCOLN’S LATE MID-FIRST TERM ADMINSTRATION AND PRESIDENCY ~ CIRCA JANUARY 1864

THIS FABULOUS ALBUM IS HIGHLIGHTED BY ALL OF LINCOLN’S CABINET, AND THE MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES SENATE 

 OVER 50 HAVE DIRECTLY SIGNED ON THE PHOTOGRAPHIC SURFACE OR PHOTOGRAPHER’S MOUNT, AND [ALL BUT 3] OF THE REMAINING OTHERS HAVE THEIR SIGNATURES ATTACHED TO, OR BELOW, THEIR IMAGE. 

[ABRAHAM LINCOLN]  [CIVIL WAR ERA PHOTOGRAPHY]. A remarkable and highly important civil war era photographic album containing 59 CDV’s, all [but 3] of which are either signed or bear the signature of the statesman depicted.  The album starts with President ABRAHAM LINCOLN who has a full signature “Abraham Lincoln” affixed below his image.  Next is HANNIBAL HAMLIN, Lincoln’s first term VP who has signed on the photographer’s surface under his image, “H. Hamlin”. Next is SCHUYLER COLFAX, Speaker of the House who has his signature attached below his image; WILLIAM SEWARD, has signed under his image on the mount; SALMON P. CHASE has signed under his image; EDWARD M. STANTON has his signature attached below his portrait; GIDEON WELLES has signed below his image; JOHN P USHER, has signed his image; MONTGOMERY BLAIR, has signed: M. BLAIR,  P[ost] M[aster] Gen[era]l on the photo’s surface; EDWARD BATES, has signed under his image and also on the verso.  Following this are the Senators from Maine, New Hampshire; Vermont, Massachusetts [CHARLES SUMNER and HENRY WILSON [later VP]; Connecticut, Rhode Island; New York; New Jersey; Pennsylvania; Delaware; Maryland; Virginia; West Virginia; Ohio [including JOHN SHERMAN]; Illinois; Indiana [THOMAS HENDRICKS later VP]; Michigan; Wisconsin; Iowa; Minnesota; Oregon; Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky and California.

The photographers represented in this album include: MATTHEW BRADY, ALEXANDER GARDNER, E & H T ANTHONY; WHITEHURST; WALLIS BROTHERS; WHIPPLE and several others – all with their imprints on the images or mounts.  

TO DUPLICATE THIS ASSEMBLANGE WOULD ALMOST BE IMPOSSIBLE TODAY WITHOUT A VAST EXPENDITURE OF TIME AND FUNDS.   IT IS SIMPLY AN EXTRAORDINARY HISTORIC RELIC OF THE CIVIL WAR ERA, EARLY PHOTOGRAPY, AND THE FIRST TERM OF LINCOLN’S ADMINISTRATION.
