PRESIDENT POLK AWARDS A CERTIFICATE OF MERIT FOR SERVICE AT THE SEIGE OF SAN ANTONIO
POLK, JAMES KNOX. (1795-1849). Eleventh President of the United States (1845-9). Uncommon Partly-printed Document Signed, “James K. Polk”, as President. One page, large oblong folio, vellum. “City of Washington”, November 25, 1848. Countersigned by Secretary of War, William L. Marcy. Ornate spread eagle vignette at top center, holding a wreath in it’s beak, perched on folded flags. Polk and Marcy’s signatures are moderately light, due to the adherence of the iron oxide ink when used on the oily surface of the vellum, yet both are legible. Very fine condition. Polk awards: “Private John Douston…for having Distinguished himself in the Service of the UNITED STATES, on the 12th and 13th day of September 1847, in the Battle of Garita San Antonio [Battle of San Antonio]”, and for this has been awarded an addition $2 per month in pay. These certificates are very scarce and are just a great part of both Texas and American history.
