THE MAN WHO WOULD STEAL ‘A RED-HOT STOVE’

CAMERON, SIMON.  (1799-1889)  Secretary of War in Lincoln’s Cabinet (1860-62);  Pennsylvanian businessman and Republican Senator.  Autograph Letter Signed, “Simon Cameron”. One full page, octavo.  February 17, 1846. To “Mr. H. Wright”. Very fine condition.  Cameron writes:

“Dear Sir, I have your letter and will do what I can to aid in getting some compensation for old Mr. Boston’s service. It will give me pleasure if I can at any time aid in carrying out your wishes. Yours truly, Simon Cameron”.

Lincoln reportedly asked Thaddeus Stevens about Cameron’s honesty and was told that “I do not believe he would steal a red hot stove.” When the President repeated the story, Cameron was offended and a retraction from Stevens was demanded. The Republican congressman replied that he could have been wrong and thus suggesting that perhaps Cameron might steal a red hot stove!
