BUSH, GEORGE HERBERT WALKER. (1924-2018). Forty-first President of the United States (1989-93). Typed Letter Signed, “George Bush”, on imprinted Congress of the United States House of Representatives letterhead. One page, quarto. “Washington, D.C.”, March 11, 1969. To “John M. McNabb, Maj. Gen. USAF Commander Seppard Air Force Base, Texas 76311”. Fine condition. Bush writes:
“Dear General McNabb, Thank you very much for your letter of February 28 inviting me to the dedication of the dormitory to the memory of the late Col. White. I enjoyed our visit on the phone the other day and am sorry to miss this dedication. I will see Pat White before this and will express my regret to her, also. I have a long-standing speaking engagement in Houston at noon on April 12th. Thanks again for your thoughtful letter. Yours very truly, George Bush”.
A wonderful ‘in-the-moment’ letter marking the tragedy of America’s first major NASA disaster, where 3 astronauts were killed on launch pad 34, while preparing for the first of the Apollo space missions, that ended with Americans…. walking on the moon.
