ADAMS, JOHN QUNICY.  (1767-1848). Sixth President of the United States (1825-1829). Handsome partly-engraved Document Signed, as President.  One page, tall folio, vellum. [Washington] July 1, 1825. Countersigned by HENRY CLAY, Secretary of State, and also by the Collector of the Port of Boston. Superb fully intact paper wafer Seal of State affixed at lower left, with all points present.  Presidential passport for the:

“Brig VOLANT – Ephraim Finney, Master  or Commander  — …of the burthen of Two Hundred and Ten tons or thereabouts, mounted with no guns, navigated with eleven men to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods and Merchandize without any hindrance, seizure or molestation…”

Double Vignette at head of a fully-rigged clipper ship, and beneath a nice harbor scene with a lighthouse in the foreground. On the verso appears multiple handwritten endorsements from various clerks and collectors of ports that the ship visited.  The vellum is clean and fresh, the accomplishment of the document is clear and clean, with Adams and Clay’s signatures clear and boldly penned.  Just a superb display piece!
